More and more people use mobile devices to access web content, so the need for mobile-friendly websites is constantly growing. To fulfill this demand, the organization that handles the universal domain name extensions, ICANN, established the .MOBI extension in 2005. The first registrations were started in September 2006, and the idea behind this domain name extension is that all websites that use it have to comply with special terms. In other words, all .MOBI websites are required to be built to be accessed properly by mobile devices in accordance with the so-called “MWI Best Practices for mobile content” established by the W3C Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) in partnership with the dot MOBI Registry organization. These incorporate how a web page is being navigated, the way it is being displayed (form and size), and so on.

The regulations have induced some worries taking into account that the top-level domain extension is the only one that specifies what devices must be able to open a website and the way in which this needs to happen, breaking the so-called principles of device independence, according to which a website should be created in such a way as to be opened by most browsers and devices, be they mobile or stationary.
